[Rumour] Intel to release 3.6 GHz Core i5

Intel is set to release an update to its current fastest dual-core, theCore i5 670. The new Core i5 680 will feature a 27x multiplier, thusclocking at 3.6 GHz.

Price and release dates are not known for certain, though $284 and Q22010 are most likely.

The IGP remains clocked at the same 733 MHz, and the TDP remains at 73W. At $284, the Core i5 680 will be a bit of a tough sell against the quad-core Core i7 860. Interestingly, we might even have six-core Phenom II X6 CPUs releasing around the same time at a similar price point, though clocked much lower.

While the Core i5 680 will be Intel's fastest clocked CPU in ages, it is not the fastest. That distinction is held be the Pentium XE 965 at 3.73 GHz or affectionately known as the thermal reactor.

Intel will be refreshing the top end of their Core i3/i5/i7 line-up in Q2, so the Core i5 680 will be a part of this trilogy of refreshes.

ABIT Engineered for Performance

Like all ABIT motherboards, the AL8 includes exclusive ABIT Engineeredfeatures. First and foremost is ABIT’s Guru™ Technology. Designed by the ABITEngineers for use only on ABIT motherboards – Guru allows end-users to reach ahigher state of hardware awareness and enlightenment. µGuru combines the ABITEngineered features ABIT EQ™, OC Guru™, FlashMenu™, and BlackBox™ into auser-friendly interface providing users the perfect environment with which tomaximize performance and stability. With ABIT AutoDrive™, users can haveoverclocking, voltage, and fan settings change automatically per application.Have the system lower fan speeds and noise levels when you are surfing the net,but automatically raise the FSB and crank the cooling up when you launch a 3Dgame. Only OC Guru with ABIT AutoDrive gives this level of control.

This latest version of Guru™ also offers compatibility with ABIT’snext-generation Guru Clock™ peripheral. Part of the Guru family, the Guru Clockallows you to access and overclock your system while playing games or usingutilities or office applications while in full screen mode without having tostop the application you are running. The convenient LCD display handilydisplays a bevy of system information, including fan speeds, temperatures, andvoltages to give you peace of mind. The AL8 features ABIT’s CPU Accelerator technology, which allows users toadjust the multiplier of select Intel CPUs to push their system to the verylimit. OTES AeroFlow™ cooling on the north bridge and OC Strips on the PCB meanthat the AL8 is able to quickly dissipate system-crashing heat away fromcritical components for excellent stability.

With ABIT Engineered features, the AL8 offers a platform stands head andshoulders over competing motherboards in its class.

Robust Features for the Future

Although the AL8 is very competitively priced, it is definitely no slouch whenit comes to features. In fact, the AL8 includes many of the advanced features ofits higher-priced bretheren, including Dual SATA2 Controllers, PCI ExpressGigabit LAN, Intel Matrix Storage Technology, and support for PCI Expressgraphics. 7.1 channel Intel® HD Audio with a professional S/PDIF In/Outinterface is also built in for quality digital sound output. 3 PCI Express x1slots and 2 PCI slots offer nearly limitless expansion possibilities, and USB2.0 and IEEE 1394a ports mean that the AL8 can support the today’s high-speedperipherals.

Built with Bulletproof Technology

Like all ABIT motherboards, the AL8 is built with Bulletproof Technology – a newstandard in terms of Quality, Reliability, Stability, and Engineering.Bulletproof Technology begins with selecting the highest quality componentsavailable. ABIT uses only Japanese-made capacitors on ABIT branded motherboards– capacitors that cost several times more than regular capacitors. While otherstry to cut components, ABIT puts quality first. Stability is further ensured asthe AL8 has passed the Torture Test, a series of looping demos and benchmarksdesigned to tax the board far beyond normal use. Add to all of this exclusiveABIT Engineered features such as µGuru, and the AL8 is truly in a class byitself.

[Rumour] ATI Southern Islands / HD 6000 to release in November

Digitimes reports that AMD is set to announce its next-generation series, codenamed Southern Islands, in October, with a hard launch in November 2010. Widely speculated to be branded ATI Radeon HD 6000 series, S. Islands is an intermediate link between Evergreen and the generation previously planned for Q4 2010 at 32nm, Northern Islands.

Details regarding S. Islands remain elusive. All we know is that it will continue to be manufactured at TSMC's 40nm, and is likely to be an evolution on the Evergreen / HD 5000 series. However, S. Islands is rumoured to introduce some of N. Island's uncore.

AMD is also expected to cut prices of its HD 5000 series products. Nvidia's products have been dropping in prices substantially, and with the introduction of the aggressively priced GTX 460, AMD's HD 5800 series products are losing out on the crucial price/performance metric. These price cuts will also prepare the market for Southern Islands GPUs.

We are still two months away from AMD's official announcements, and much of S. Islands still remains a mystery.

[Rumour] Nvidia GT300 to be faster than HD 5870

Now that we have a good idea on HD 5870's performance, Fudzilla reportsthat its sources have great confidence that GT300 will end up fasterthan the HD 5870. Judging by the "absolute confidence", it might end upquite a bit faster too.

The GT300 will also have a dual GPUversion, which will outperform Hemlock (dual 5870).

Fudzillaalso suggests a "late November" release date, which is quite earlyrelative to other rumours.

So, there you have it. If, asFudzilla's sources claim, Nvidia can manage to make GT300 with decentyields and a die size not much bigger than Cypress, releasing lateNovember, suddenly, we have the tables turned - and Nvidia in thedriver's seat.

We can also expect more information and samplesby the end of this month, as previously rumoured.

Meanwhile, on the other spectrum of rumours, it's all doom and gloom for Nvidia. Charlie of SemiAccurate reports Nvidia is suffering pathetic yields of 2% on the GT300. While outspoken with his criticism for Nvidia, Charlie is usually right on with the facts, but we will take this figure with a big bag of salt. However, similar news of <10% yields has been confirmed by several sources, including Kyle, editor-in-chief of HardOCP.

It is quite possible that both these news are true - GT300 may indeed be a tremendous chip. At the same time, it may be impractical to fabricate. It might be one of those things "too good to be real". After all, Fuad didn't mention yield, and Charlie didn't mentionperformance.

One of the rules often followed by GPU makers has been - "shrink first, architecture second". (Reflected by Intel's tick-tock approach as well) As we know, Nvidia are champions of shrinking in the last few years. This time, however, Nvidia has jumped straight onto the 40nm bandwagon, with a brand new architecture. ATI had the good mind to try out 40nm with RV740 (HD 4770), which did indeed suffer significant yield issues, despite being a relatively straightforward shrink. No doubt this data helped them fine tune Evergreen chips. Till date, Nvidia's GT200b 40nm shrinks have been largely unavailable, seen only in few OEM systems. It may be true that Nvidia is suffering from yield issues across all 40nm products. Needless to say, moving straight to a troublesome process with a revolutionary architecture and a big die is a major gamble to say the least.

We will keep a close eye on how the GT300 develops.

old action heroes don’t die — they just get “transformed”

—transformed into Christian action heroes, that is! Yes, folks, blaxploitation veteran Fred “The Hammer” Williamson and second-tier martial arts star Leo Fong staged a comeback in 2005, but you probably missed it if you weren’t looking too closely. Williamson, star of classics like “Bucktown,” and Fong, star of less-than-classics like “Revenge Of The Bushido Blade” got themselves some old-time religion and re-emerged in the 2005 Jesus-vs.-the-drug-lords modern cinematic parable “Transformed.”

The mean streets of Westgate (which look to be Los Angeles suburbs) are the setting for this tale of—ahem!—intrigue , corruption and redemption, the debut (and to date only, as near as I can tell) directorial effort of Efren C. Pinon, who, if he plays his cards right (if his religion allows him to play cards at all, that is) could very well become the Ron Ormond of the 21st century—and who wouldn’t aspire to that lofty goal?

Westgate is a city besieged by the scourge of illegal narcotics, and while exactly which drugs are tearing the community apart isn’t spelled out (in a Christian flick apparently just saying the word “drugs” will do), the goal of the evil dope-pushing syndicate is apparently to get every kid in town hooked on their product (again, whatever that nameless product may be).

Enter Pastor Debra (Shirlee Knudson), a plucky young lady of the cloth who’s determined to win back her church’s neighborhood, and then the city, from the pushers, lead by the ruthless Cholo (Ken Moreno), a guy who’s apparently dealing drugs to provide a better life for his young son—by getting all the boy’s friends hooked. That little dichotomy doesn’t seem to bother Cholo much, though, and why should it? He’s got friends in high places, including none other than the mayor himself, who are all in for a piece of Cholo’s action and look the other way while he turns the children of the city into hopeless dope fiends.

Pastor Debra is no pushover, however—she’s evidently one of those hip, modern preachers who isn’t above engaging in some hardboiled martial arts action if that’s what it takes to keep the kids in her community safe. Watching her and her friends beat up the pushers in a local bar and then high-fiving each other and saying “praise Jesus!” really is a sight to behold, and I’d venture to guess you won’t find anything like it in any other movie ever made—which probably isn’t such a bad thing, in and of itself, but you have to give Pinon and the other folks behind “Transformed” some credit for not being afraid to be unintentionally absurd.

Our tough-as-nails pastor has some friends in high places, too—the mysterious aged ninja-type known only as The Fist (Fong), who always seems to show up when trouble is at hand, and the equally-aged-but-no-less tough mercenary warrior known as The Hammer (Williamson), a top-dollar freelance operative brought in by a secret unnamed group of good guys to provide help in Westgate’s hour of need.

It won’t be an easy fight—the whole city power structure is lined up against our good pastor, the local DEA office is on the take, and secret computer files reveal that the drug network reaches all the way to the top, with President George W. Rush (yes, really) and Vice President Dick Chaney (yes, really again) named among the nefarious network’s head honchos.

The hand of God has a way of intervening in these things, though (apparently often through tragedy), and when Cholo’s son O.D.’s on product supplied to the school kids by old man’s network, he lets Jesus into his heart while he prays by his comatose kid’s hospital bed (hence the “Transformed” title) and now Pastor Debra and her mystery men have a powerful ally on the inside and are ready to take down the dealers and their ninja army (well, okay, it’s just a few ninjas, and they look pretty old and slow themselves, but it’s the thought that counts).

I don’t know how else to say it, folks, “Transformed” is one of those things you’ve just got to see to believe. Scripture-quoting badass preacher lady and her arthritic protectors taking on a drug network that reaches all the way to the White House yet is apparently inept enough to be brought down by essentially a handful of concerned neighbors, albeit concerned neighbors who know how to fight. The seasoned action exploitation fan will find a lot to like here, people who? like just plain? weird movies will find a more-than-generous amount of? jaw-dropping moments, and everyone else will wonder, probably quite rightly I might add, just how this thing got made, and more importantly — why?

“Transformed” never got a theatrical release and I couldn’t even find any movie poster or stills for the thing to include in this review. It is, however, available on DVD, as you can tell from the photo at the top of this post, as part of the “Rareflix Volume 4″ box set from Media Blasters. For those who haven’t been picking them up, I have to say that the Rareflix sets are not only a bargain, they’re also a blast. Volume 4 features James Bryan’s “Groove Tube”/”Kentucky Fried Movie”-style comedy “Boogie Vision” and Antonio Margheriti’s spaghetti Bond rip-off “Lightning Bolt” in addition to “Transformed.” The extras on the set are pretty light (the hysterical commentaries featuring various semi-inebriated Media Blasters behind-the-scenes personnel that featured on the first two volumes are sadly missing), but “Transformed” does include a commentary from Leo Fong and each disc is packed with previews for other cool Media Blasters titles, so it’s still a damn solid value for your entertainment dollar.
